02The business in one line

What does Dollar Tree do?

Shoppers pay Dollar Tree for low-priced household basics, party goods and seasonal items; of every $100 that came in during FY2025, $63.2 went on the goods, $28.0 on running stores and the company, and $6.3 was left as profit from continuing operations.

  • Dollar Tree's stores serve customers across a broad range of incomes, mainly in suburbs. Most stores are 8,000 to 10,000 square feet and carry about 8,400 items.
  • Dollar Tree sold its other chain, Family Dollar, on Jul 5, 2025. Family Dollar's results are now shown separately as discontinued operations, so this page's main figures cover Dollar Tree stores only.

How spread out the customers are

Dollar Tree sells to the public, so no single customer is material. The shares above are merchandise categories of FY2025 net sales. The 10-K says its stores serve customers with a broad range of income levels, mainly in suburbs, and that revenue in Canada is not material.

04Why it makes money

Why does Dollar Tree make money?

Dollar Tree earns a few dollars per $100 of sales by selling large volumes of low-priced goods through many leased stores.

Low prices bring frequent visits, and buying in bulk, much of it imported directly, keeps the cost of goods near $63 per $100 of sales. Store running costs rose faster than sales: selling, general and administrative costs grew from $23.9 to $28.2 per $100 of total revenue between FY2022 and FY2025, and operating income per $100 fell from $13.6 to $8.5.

FY2022 to FY2025

  1. Leased stores open near suburban shoppers
  2. Low prices from $1.25 bring frequent visits
  3. Bulk buying, about 40% direct imports, keeps the cost of goods low
  4. Own distribution centers supply about 90% of inventory
  5. Multi-price items raise the amount spent per visit
  6. Cash from stores pays for new stores and buybacks

  • Steady store sales3 of 5

Weak spot

Reliance on imports from China and on low prices

China supplies the vast majority of direct imports, so tariff changes move its costs: Q2 FY2026 gross margin of 42.9% included 680 basis points from tariff refunds, the company says. Customer traffic fell in Q3 and Q4 FY2025 after retail price changes, the 10-K says, and again in Q1 FY2026.
