Where does $100 of Goldman Sachs' money go?

Of every $100 that came in (interest earned plus fees and other noninterest income), this is where it went, starting with the interest paid to depositors and lenders.

Goldman Sachs · FY2025

Receipt for every $100

Where $100 of Goldman Sachs' money went in FY2025
Interest paid to depositors and lenders$53.4
Employees$15.1
Brokerage, technology, offices and other costs$14.9
Provision for credit losses (a release in FY2025, adds)−$0.9
Income tax$3.7
Preferred stock dividends$0.7
Kept as profit for common stockholders$13.0
Total$100

Each line = amount ÷ total money in × 100. Lines may not add to exactly $100 because of rounding.

How this is worked out

Cityfort calculation from the FY2025 10-K. Of every $100 that came in during FY2025 (interest income $80,373 million plus noninterest revenues $44,724 million = $125,097 million): each line = line ÷ $125,097 million × 100. The provision line is negative because a $2.48 billion release of Apple Card loan reserves turned it into a $1,113 million benefit. The receipt counts interest income before interest expense, so its profit share differs from net income ÷ net revenues (28.0%).

04Why it makes money

Why does Goldman Sachs make money?

Profit swings with how busy markets are, because pay moves with revenue but many costs do not

When clients trade and do deals more, revenue rises faster than costs. Pay fell from $17.7 billion in FY2021 to $15.1 billion in FY2022 as net revenues fell from $59.3 billion to $47.4 billion. ROE was 7.5% in FY2023, a year with $1.46 billion of commercial real estate impairments plus consumer write-downs of $506 million (GreenSky) and $504 million (goodwill).

Diluted EPS for common stockholders, after preferred stock dividends ($876 million in FY2025).

Net interest income = interest earned on loans and securities minus interest paid to depositors and lenders. Revenue (net of interest expense) = net interest income + noninterest income (fees and other income). Provision for credit losses = money set aside for loans that may not be repaid. Net income is the amount for common stockholders. Fiscal years are the company's own (Fiscal year ends on December 31 (calendar year)).

  • Revenue is total net revenues (net interest income plus noninterest revenues), as Goldman reports it. Interest income is shown before interest expense: $80,373 million against $66,814 million in FY2025.
  • The margin column is Goldman's annual net yield on interest-earning assets from the 10-K statistical disclosures; Goldman does not report a net interest margin or a quarterly yield.
  • Loans, the allowance and both ratios cover loans at amortized cost only. Loans at fair value and held for sale, including the $19.7 billion Apple Card portfolio at Dec 31, 2025, carry no allowance; gross loans of all kinds were $239,882 million then.
  • Noninterest-bearing deposits are left blank: Goldman reports only average balances ($5,753 million in 2025) and says substantially all of its deposits pay interest.
  • The provision for credit losses was a net benefit of $1,113 million in FY2025 and $2,123 million in Q4 FY2025, mainly the $2.48 billion reserve release when the Apple Card loans were moved to held for sale.
  • CET1 is under the standardized approach, the lower of Goldman's two ratios in every year shown. ROTE is Goldman's own (non-GAAP) measure.

    1MDB settlements and guarantee

Between 2012 and 2013, Goldman subsidiaries arranged or bought about $6.5 billion of bonds of 1MDB, a Malaysian state fund. In October 2020 Goldman settled investigations with the US Justice Department, the SEC, the Federal Reserve and other regulators; a charge against Group Inc. under a three-year deferred prosecution agreement was dismissed on May 6, 2024, and its Malaysian unit pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Under a 2020 settlement, Goldman guaranteed that Malaysia would receive at least $1.4 billion of recovered assets. Malaysia demanded a final payment of about $1 billion in August 2025; Goldman says no payment should be required, and arbitration is ongoing.

  • regulatory

Shareholder class action over 1MDB disclosures

A securities class action alleges violations of the Exchange Act in Group Inc.'s disclosures and public statements about 1MDB and seeks unspecified damages; on Sep 4, 2025 the court granted class certification in part. On Dec 23, 2025 the Second Circuit denied the defendants' petition for review of that ruling, on Mar 2, 2026 the defendants moved for summary judgment, and on May 20, 2026 the plaintiff moved for preliminary approval of a settlement. The firm says it has reserved the full amount of its proposed contribution to the settlement.
