02The business in one line

What does PayPal do?

Merchants and consumers pay PayPal fees on each payment; about half goes to the processors and banks that move the money, and $15.7 of every $100 that came in stayed as net income in FY2025.

  • PayPal handled $1.79 trillion of payments for 439 million active accounts in FY2025. Transaction fees were 89.8% of its $33.2 billion revenue.
  • Transaction expense took $16.0 billion. Operating income was $6.1 billion, or $18.3 per $100 of revenue.

03Who pays it

Who pays PayPal?

  • Consumers

    Not disclosed

  • Partners and interest on customer money

How spread out the customers are

PayPal does not disclose revenue by type of payer or any customer's share of revenue. Its two revenue types show what fees are for: transaction revenues were 89.8% of FY2025 revenue and other value added services 10.2%. At Dec 31, 2025, one customer was 12% and one partner institution 23% of net accounts receivable.

04Why it makes money

Why does PayPal make money?

Each payment earns PayPal a fee, but close to half of its revenue goes straight out to the processors and banks that fund it.

Revenue rises with payment volume, which reached $1.79 trillion in FY2025. Transaction expense took 0.89% of that volume. PayPal's 10-K says card-funded payments generally cost it more than payments from a bank or a PayPal or Venmo balance.
