04Why it makes money

Why does Altria make money?

Altria ships fewer cigarettes each year but earns more on each one, so smokeable operating income has held near $11 billion.

Altria's U.S. cigarette shipments fell about 10% a year from FY2023 to FY2025, to 61.8 billion. Over the same years its smokeable products segment's operating income rose from $10,670 million to $10,984 million. Most of the cash goes to dividends and buybacks.
