04Why it makes money

Why does Fortinet make money?

Every firewall Fortinet sells brings years of subscription and support fees, so most of its revenue repeats.

Customers buy a FortiGate once, then pay each year for threat updates and support, often in advance. In FY2025, 71% of service revenue came from deferred revenue held at the start of the year. Services grew from $62.4 to $67.4 of every $100 of revenue between FY2021 and FY2025.

FY2021 to FY2025

  1. A customer installs FortiGate firewalls
  2. It adds FortiGuard subscriptions and FortiCare support
  3. Subscriptions and support renew each term, often billed ahead
  4. Billing ahead brings cash in before revenue is booked
  5. Cash pays for chips, engineers and sales
  6. Older firewalls are replaced and more products are sold to the same customer
