02The business in one line

What does eBay do?

Sellers pay eBay a cut of each sale plus fees to promote their listings; most of that money goes on running the marketplace, marketing and product development, and what's left is profit.

  • eBay's revenue was $13.94 for every $100 of goods sold on its sites in FY2025, and it kept $20.51 of each $100 of revenue as operating income.

It takes a cut of goods other people sell, so it holds no stock, but it must keep buyers and sellers coming back.

eBay does not own the goods sold on its sites. Its revenue was $13.94 for every $100 of gross merchandise volume in FY2025. It kept $20.51 of each $100 of revenue as operating income, or $2.28 billion.

  • Governance

An unsolicited takeover proposal and a 9.8% holder

eBay's board rejected GameStop's non-binding cash-and-stock proposal in May 2026; GameStop then reported a 9.8% stake. eBay's adjusted results leave out transaction costs that include costs of unsolicited proposals and shareholder activism, $28 million in Q3 FY2026 together with acquisition costs.

    Rising fraud and transaction losses

Transaction losses were $393 million in the first nine months of 2026, up from $273 million a year earlier (Q3 FY2026 earnings release). eBay tied $73 million of the rise to unfavorable fraud and recovery rates and $41 million to higher volume.
