Each line = amount ÷ total money in × 100. Lines may not add to exactly $100 because of rounding.

How this is worked out

Cityfort calculation from FY2025 10-K. Of every $100 of FY2025 net sales: each line = line ÷ $86.3 billion × 100, rounded, so the lines add to $99.9. Lowe's reports interest income inside net interest, so net sales is the whole of the money in. FY2025 net income is after $321 million of acquisition costs and amortization before tax.

02The business in one line

What does Lowe's do?

Homeowners and contractors pay Lowe's for goods and services; most of that goes on buying the goods and running stores, and $7.7 of every $100 of FY2025 net sales was left as net income.

  • FY2025 ran from February 2025 to January 2026 (it ended Jan 30, 2026). Lowe's names each year after the calendar year it starts in.
  • Recent growth came mostly from buying companies. Retail sales were $84.1 billion in FY2025, against $83.7 billion in FY2024, and the acquired FBM and ADG added $2.2 billion.

04Why it makes money

Why does Lowe's make money?

Lowe's keeps about a third of each sale after product costs, and running costs and interest decide how much of that stays.

Gross margin, the share left after cost of sales, barely moved: 33.3% in FY2021 and 33.5% in FY2025. Operating margin fell from 12.6% to 11.8% over those years, and net interest rose from $885 million to $1.4 billion. Customers made fewer purchases at a higher average value.

  2. Stores carry about 37,000 items, and online sales added about 1.05 points to FY2025 comparable sales
  3. $33.5 of each $100 of net sales is left after cost of sales
  4. SG&A takes about $19.5 of that $33.5
  5. FBM and ADG add sales to larger contractors, with a $70 million operating loss in FY2025

Management said on May 20, 2026 that "roughly 60% to 65% of our revenue" comes from do-it-yourself customers. The two statements have different dates and may not share a base.

19Financial strength and debt

How much debt does Lowe's have?

At Jul 31, 2026 debt exceeded cash by $34.4 billion, about 3.7 times the $9.3 billion of operating cash flow in the prior four quarters.
  • Total debt$37.6B
  • Cash and investments$3.2B
  • Net debt (debt minus cash)$34.4B
  • Net worth (shareholders' money)−$7.4B
  • Debt includes finance leases ($391 million at Jan 30, 2026) and leaves out operating leases ($4.8 billion at Jan 30, 2026). Net debt deducts cash only, not short-term investments. Net debt is a Cityfort calculation from Q2 FY2026 10-Q, and the multiple also uses FY2025 10-K.
  • Liabilities exceed assets. The shareholders' deficit was $7.4 billion at Jul 31, 2026, against $9.9 billion at Jan 30, 2026. It first appeared in FY2021, and Lowe's bought $32.1 billion of its own shares in FY2020 to FY2022 (Cityfort calculation from FY2022 10-K). A debt-to-equity ratio has no meaning here.
  • Total debt was $35.5 billion at Jan 31, 2025, before the FBM deal, and $39.9 billion at Jan 30, 2026. Lowe's repaid $2.4 billion of bonds in the first half of FY2026, and $2.4 billion of debt was due within a year at Jul 31, 2026.
  • Cash was $982 million at Jan 30, 2026 and $786 million at May 1, 2026. Lowe's says sales are highest in its second quarter.
  • For FY2025, net debt was 3.15 times EBITDA, up from 1.69 times in FY2021 (Cityfort calculation from FY2022 10-K and FY2025 10-K). Lowe's own lease-adjusted ratio is a different measure, shown with its own measures.
  • Goodwill and intangibles were $9.7 billion at Jul 31, 2026. Lowe's had $5.0 billion of undrawn revolving credit at Jan 30, 2026, including a $1.0 billion facility due to mature in September 2026.
