Think of it like this

Like a manager paid a yearly fee to look after other people's savings, plus a share of the gain when investments are sold for more than they cost.

What it does

  • Does: Raises money from pension funds, insurers and individual investors
  • Does: Invests it through funds in property, companies, loans and other assets
  • Does: Charges management fees on the money it manages
  • Does: Takes a share of fund profits (performance allocations, often called carried interest)
  • Does: Invests some of its own money alongside its funds

What it does not do

  • Does not: Does not take deposits or lend as a bank does
  • Does not: Does not own most of the assets it manages: the funds' investors do
  • Does not: Does not let common stockholders elect its directors
