04Why it makes money

Why does BlackRock make money?

BlackRock charges a small fee on each dollar it manages, so its revenue moves with markets and with how much money clients add.

Base fees and securities lending were $19.2 billion of FY2025 revenue of $24.2 billion. Fee rates differ by product: non-ETF index funds held 29% of average assets but brought 7% of base fees, while private markets held 2% and brought 12%. Operating income per $100 of revenue fell from $38.5 in FY2021 to $29.1 in FY2025 as acquisition costs rose.
