04Why it makes money

Why does Applied Materials make money?

Applied spends on research to build machines for each new generation of chips, then earns service revenue from every machine it has installed.

Chipmakers buy new machines when they add factory capacity or move to new chip designs. Applied spent 12.6% of FY2025 revenue on research and engineering. Its service segment brought in $6.4 billion that year from machines already in customers' factories.

FY2021 to FY2025

  1. Applied spends on research for new chipmaking steps
  2. Chipmakers buy machines to add capacity or make newer chips
  3. Each machine sold joins the base installed in customers' factories
  4. Installed machines need service, spare parts and software
  5. Profit pays for more research, dividends and buybacks
  6. New-machine sales rise and fall with chipmakers' spending

What could go wrong for Applied Materials?

  • Demand

    Sales depend on chipmakers' spending

Chipmakers buy machines when they add capacity or move to new designs. Applied's CFO cited digestion of capacity in China and uneven demand for the most advanced chips before Q4 FY2025 revenue fell to $6.80 billion from $7.30 billion.
