04Why it makes money

Why does Abbott make money?

Abbott earns the most per dollar on medical devices, so its profit depends on how fast devices grow, and COVID tests showed how quickly a segment can shrink.

Medical Devices kept $33.7 of segment operating earnings per $100 of FY2025 sales, against $18.4 to $23.3 in the other three segments. Devices' share of segment operating earnings rose from 33.8% in FY2021 to 61.1% in FY2025, as COVID test sales fell and Diabetes Care grew.

18The company's own measures · FY2024, FY2025, Q3 FY2026 and the first nine months of FY2026

What do Abbott's own measures show?

Adjusted (non-GAAP) figures are Abbott's own measures, which it calls "excluding specified items", shown next to the official (GAAP) number. They are never added together. In 2026 Abbott reports growth on a comparable basis that includes Exact Sciences in both years; in 2025 it used organic growth, so the two are not chained here.
  • Official (GAAP): Diluted EPS, FY2025

    $3.72

Company's own measure: Adjusted diluted EPS, FY2025

    $5.15

Abbott leaves out intangible amortization ($1.7 billion before tax), restructuring, legal reserves and other specified items. On Jan 22, 2025 it had said it expected $5.05 to $5.25.

    52.6%

Company's own measure: Adjusted gross margin, FY2025 (Cityfort calculation from the Q4 FY2025 earnings release)
