What does Starbucks need to run?

  • Green coffee

Starbucks buys arabica beans from many regions, mostly on fixed-price or price-to-be-fixed contracts, and hedges part of the price. Its FY2025 10-K says coffee prices rose over five years, with significant increases in the last two.

  • People

About 381,000 employees at Sep 28, 2025, including about 214,000 in US company-operated stores.

  • Leased coffeehouses

Operating lease liabilities were $9.1 billion at Sep 27, 2026, down from $10.5 billion a year earlier after China left the balance sheet.

  • Capital spending

Purchases of property and equipment were $1.3 billion in FY2026, down from $2.8 billion in FY2024.

Starbucks said in its Oct 29, 2026 earnings release that it expects FY2027, a 53-week year, to bring revenue about 1% lower, with China retail no longer consolidated; that figure includes about $700 million from the extra week. It expects North America comparable sales growth of about 4.0%, GAAP diluted EPS of $3.07 to $3.17 and about 1,200 net new coffeehouses, led by International.

  • Debt is long-term debt at carrying value, including $1.5 billion due within a year; $9.1 billion of operating lease liabilities are not counted. Net debt and interest coverage (operating income ÷ interest expense) are a Cityfort calculation from the Q4 FY2026 earnings release.
  • Net debt fell from $12.6 billion a year earlier. In May 2026 Starbucks bought back about $1.3 billion of its notes through tender offers, using China deal proceeds.
  • Shareholders' equity has been negative in every year since at least FY2021: total liabilities exceed total assets. The deficit was $7.7 billion at Sep 27, 2026, so debt-to-equity is not shown.
  • Long-term deferred revenue of $5.6 billion is mostly what remains of about $7 billion Nestlé paid up front in fiscal 2018. Starbucks books it as revenue over time; it is not debt.
