04Why it makes money

Why does Occidental make money?

Occidental's profit moves mainly with oil prices, which it does not set.

Occidental's realized oil price fell from $76.85 a barrel in FY2023 to $64.60 in FY2025, and net income to common stockholders fell from $3,773 million to $1,647 million. In Q2 FY2026 its realized oil price was $96.78, against $59.22 in Q4 FY2025, and quarterly net income to common stockholders was $2,807 million.

Net income to common stockholders per $100 of net sales

$16.3$7.6

FY2023 to FY2025

  1. Occidental spends on new wells, mostly in the Permian Basin.
  2. The wells produce oil, gas liquids and gas.
  3. It sells them at prices tied to world and US markets.
  4. Field costs and wear on wells take most of the money.
  5. Cash pays interest, preferred and common dividends, and debt.
  6. Wells decline, so the drilling has to continue.

  • Oil, gas liquids and natural gas (oil and gas segment)

Production was 1,434 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day in FY2025: Permian Basin 786, Rockies and other US 284, Gulf of America 132, international 232. Segment sales were $20,902 million.

  • Moving and selling oil and gas (midstream and marketing segment)

Uses gathering, processing, pipeline and storage capacity to get oil and gas to buyers in the US and abroad, for Occidental and third parties. It includes the Al Hosn gas plant in the UAE. FY2025 sales were $1,279 million.

  • Carbon capture (inside midstream and marketing)

Its low-carbon unit is building STRATOS, a direct air capture plant designed to capture up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year once complete. On the Q2 FY2026 call (Aug 6, 2026), CEO Richard Jackson said full plant commissioning was expected to begin around the end of 2026, "as we transition to operations in 2027."

It works like a farm that sells its crop at the market price: it controls its costs, not the price.

What it does

  • Does: Is the largest independent oil producer in Oman, its FY2025 10-K says, with 72 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day.
  • Does: Pays an 8% dividend on about $8.5 billion of preferred stock held by Berkshire Hathaway.

What it does not do
