04Why it makes money
Why does ExxonMobil make money?
ExxonMobil's profit moves with oil prices and refining margins, which it does not set.
ExxonMobil's Oct 30, 2026 slides say a $1 rise in Brent crude adds about $700 million of annual earnings. A $1 rise in the refining margin adds about $800 million. From Q4 FY2025 to Q3 FY2026, Brent went from $63.69 to $97.01 and the margin from $18.3 to $50.3. Net income went from $6.5 billion to $15.4 billion.
Net income per $100 of sales
$14.0$8.9
FY2022 to FY2025
- ExxonMobil spends on wells, platforms and gas plants to produce oil and gas.
- It sells that output at prices tied to world markets.
- Refineries buy crude and sell fuels, earning the gap, called the refining margin.
- Chemical and specialty plants turn oil and gas into plastics' building blocks and lubricants.
- Cash pays for new projects, dividends and share buybacks.
- Production uses up reserves, so the spending has to continue.
