Where did $100 go?
Every company takes in money. Some goes to costs, some goes to taxes, and the rest is kept. In this lesson you will guess where $100 went, then check.
What to do
- Your group gets cards for one company. Each card names one line of its receipt, but not the amount.
- Guess how many dollars of each $100 went to each line.
- Your guesses must add up to $100.
- Write them in Part C of your worksheet.
Warm-up: a lemonade stand (made-up numbers)
- Lemons, sugar and cups: $35
- Rent for the stand's spot: $10
- Helper's pay: $30
- Tax: $5
- Kept as net income: $20
- Total: $100
How to turn yearly numbers into "per $100"
Divide the line by the total money that came in. Then multiply by 100.
Example (made-up numbers): a bike shop took in $50,000 in a year and kept $4,000 as net income. $4,000 ÷ $50,000 × 100 = $8. So it kept $8 of every $100.
Exit ticket
The exit ticket is on page 2 of your worksheet. Your teacher hands out page 2 after the reveal and will tell you when to answer it.
The real receipts
Show the real receipts (open this after your teacher's reveal)
Amounts are rounded to the nearest 10 cents: $6.7 means $6.70. Because of rounding, a receipt may add up to $99.90 or $100.10.
Check the hook: Nike kept $3.1 billion as net income in FY2026. It took in $46.5 billion. $3.1 billion ÷ $46.5 billion × 100 = $6.7. So Nike kept about $6.7 of every $100.

| Advertising and athlete deals (demand creation) | $10.2 |
| Wages, rent and other overhead | $24.4 |
| Income tax | $1.7 |
| Kept as net income | $6.7 |
| Total | $100.0 |
