04Why it makes money

Why does Salesforce make money?

Software costs little to deliver, so profit depends on how much Salesforce spends to sell it.

Gross profit, revenue minus the direct cost of delivering the software, was $77.68 per $100 of FY2026 revenue. Sales and marketing took $34.55 of each $100, down from $44.75 in FY2022. Operating income rose from $2.07 to $20.06 per $100 over those years.

  4. Selling it costs about $35 per $100, the largest cost
  5. What's left pays for research, buybacks, dividends and acquisitions
