04Why it makes money

Why does Walmart make money?

Walmart earns a few dollars per $100 of revenue on a very large base of sales.

Walmart says it prices items at everyday low prices and controls costs to pay for them. It kept $4.53 of operating income per $100 of total revenues in FY2022 and $4.18 in FY2026; FY2023's $3.34 included about $3.3 billion of opioid settlement charges. The $3.1 kept per $100 that came in reflects $0.29 of net gains before tax, mostly on investments.
