02The business in one line

What does United do?

Travelers pay United for seats and partners such as Chase pay it for miles; most of the money goes on staff, fuel and running airports and aircraft, and $5.6 of every $100 that came in during FY2025 was left as net income.

  • Passenger tickets were 90.5% of FY2025 revenue, other revenue, mostly from MileagePlus partners, 6.5% and cargo 3.0% (Cityfort calculation from the FY2025 10-K).
  • United does not hedge fuel. It paid $3.90 a gallon in Q3 FY2026, up from $2.43 a year earlier.

How spread out the customers are

These shares are by type of revenue (Cityfort calculation from the FY2025 10-K), because United gives no split by customer. Its FY2025 10-K calls Chase its most significant contract to sell MileagePlus miles, without a dollar figure.

04Why it makes money

Why does United make money?

United's profit is the small gap between what each seat mile earns and what it costs.

A seat mile is one seat flown one mile. In Q3 FY2026, United earned 20.19 cents per seat mile and spent 18.56 cents. Fuel is not hedged, so its price passes straight into costs.
