04Why it makes money

Why does Dell make money?

Dell earns a thin margin on a large volume, and its running costs have not kept pace with sales.

Gross margin per $100 of revenue fell from $23.83 in FY2024 to $20.00 in FY2026, and Dell says AI servers pressure that rate. Sales, administration and research fell faster, from $17.71 to $12.82 per $100. In the first half of FY2027 Dell kept $8.34 of net income, including $704 million of pre-tax investment gains, and $9.96 of operating income per $100.

  4. Dell sells them, with support and financing
  5. Larger volume spreads sales and research costs thinner
  6. Cash funds parts, customer financing, buybacks and dividends

08What could go wrong

What could go wrong for Dell?

  • Concentration

A few large buyers drive AI server sales

One unnamed customer was 12% of FY2026 revenue, substantially all in ISG. Dell says AI solutions have so far been bought "primarily by a small number of larger customers and cloud service providers". It says larger orders can mean uneven results, more working capital and more credit.

  • Cash and liquidity

Cash is tied up in parts and customer loans

Inventories rose to $21.3 billion on Jul 31, 2026 from $10.4 billion on Jan 30, 2026. Financing receivables rose to $20.4 billion from $14.3 billion. Cash from operations was $2.2 billion in Q2 FY2027, against net income of $4.1 billion. Accounts payable were $49.7 billion.

Watch Inventories, accounts payable, financing receivables and cash from operations each quarter.

  • Demand

    AI revenue can arrive unevenly

    Dell's Q2 FY2027 10-Q describes "inherent non-linearity" in the timing of AI demand and shipments. AI server revenue was $8.2 billion in Q2 FY2026, $5.6 billion in Q3 FY2026 and $16.4 billion in Q2 FY2027. • Raw-material prices

    Memory costs and supply

The Q2 FY2027 10-Q says limited capacity at memory makers pushed memory component costs up substantially, and Dell expects component inflation through the rest of FY2027. All components come from outside vendors, some from a single source. Dell says more AI servers in the mix also pressure the margin rate.
