01 · The business in one line

What does NVIDIA do?

Cloud companies, AI developers and computer makers pay NVIDIA for AI chips and systems; making them took $27 of every $100 that came in during FY2026, and $53 was left as profit.

  • Data Center products gave $193.7 billion of NVIDIA's $215.9 billion FY2026 revenue. Gaming chips gave $16.0 billion.
  • NVIDIA does not make its own chips. TSMC and Samsung make the silicon wafers; SK Hynix, Micron and Samsung supply the memory.

02 · What it sells

What does NVIDIA sell?

NVIDIA designs GPUs: chips that do many small calculations at once, which suits AI and graphics. It also sells the networking that links thousands of these chips, whole server systems and software. Figures below are FY2026, on the old five-platform basis. From Q1 FY2027 NVIDIA reports two platforms instead, Data Center and Edge Computing; FY2026 has not been restated on the new basis.
  • Data Center compute

GPUs and complete AI server systems that cloud companies and AI developers use to train and run AI models. Revenue: $162.4 billion in FY2026.

  • Data Center networking

Switches, network cards and links that connect thousands of chips so they work as one computer. Revenue: $31.4 billion in FY2026, up from $8.6 billion in FY2024.

  • Gaming

GeForce graphics chips for gaming PCs; add-in board makers turn them into graphics cards. Revenue: $16.0 billion in FY2026.

  • Professional Visualization

RTX and Quadro graphics for professional workstations. Revenue: $3.2 billion in FY2026.

  • Automotive

Chips and software for cars. Revenue: $2.3 billion in FY2026.

Think of it like this

Like a publisher that designs a book and pays a printing house to print it: NVIDIA designs the chips and pays TSMC and Samsung to make them.

What it does

  • Does: Designs GPUs and networking chips
  • Does: Sells complete AI server systems, not only single chips
  • Does: Sells AI software as part of its Compute & Networking segment
  • Does: Invests in other companies, holding $42.8 billion of listed stakes on Jul 26, 2026

What it does not do

  • Does not: Does not run its own chip factories: TSMC and Samsung make the wafers
  • Does not: Does not make the memory its systems use: it buys it from SK Hynix, Micron and Samsung
  • Does not: Does not name its largest customers in its filings

07 · Why it makes money

Why does NVIDIA make money?

Chips are designed once and sold in large numbers, so research costs grew slower than revenue

Research spending rose from $5.3 billion in FY2022 to $18.5 billion in FY2026. Revenue rose faster, from $26.9 billion to $215.9 billion. So research fell from $19.6 to $8.6 of every $100 of revenue, and more of each sale was left as profit.

Operating profit per $100 of revenue

$37.3$60.4

FY2022 to FY2026

  1. NVIDIA spends on research to design new chips, networking and systems
  2. TSMC and Samsung make the chips; NVIDIA buys memory from suppliers
  3. Cloud companies, AI developers and computer makers buy the systems
  4. Revenue grew faster than research costs, so profit per $100 rose
  5. Profit pays for the next chip generation, buybacks and stakes in other firms

↺ Step 5 feeds back into step 1.

Flags to know about

  • disclosure

    Largest customers are not named

NVIDIA reports each direct customer above 10% of revenue by share only. In FY2026 two gave 22% and 14%. An AI research and deployment company buying through NVIDIA's customers is also described without a name or share.

  • disclosure · May 20, 2026

    Non-GAAP definition changed in Q1 FY2027

From Q1 FY2027 NVIDIA's adjusted figures no longer leave out stock-based pay. It recast only some past quarters, so older adjusted figures are on a different basis.

  • disclosure

Revenue breakdowns changed basis three times

From Q3 FY2026, revenue by region is by customer headquarters, not billing location. From Q1 FY2027, five market platforms became two. In Q2 FY2027 one customer moved from ACIE to Hyperscale. Old and new series cannot be joined.

  • other · Aug 17, 2026

Contingent guaranties of up to $105 billion

On Aug 17, 2026 NVIDIA agreed to back lease values for SB Energy data centers where an OpenAI affiliate is the tenant. NVIDIA pays only if the tenant is insolvent or does not pay; OpenAI agreed to reimburse NVIDIA.

20 · What could go wrong

What could go wrong for NVIDIA?

  • Regulation

US and China rules limit NVIDIA's China data center sales

Since 2022 the US has required licences for NVIDIA's top data center chips sold to China. A rule on H20 chips in April 2025 led to a $4.5 billion charge. NVIDIA says it was effectively foreclosed from China's data center compute market. China revenue fell from $25.0 billion in FY2025 to $19.7 billion in FY2026.

Watch Licence decisions and China revenue in each 10-Q ($7.9 billion in Q2 FY2027, not split by product).

  • Concentration

A few unnamed customers bring in much of the revenue

Two direct customers gave 22% and 14% of FY2026 revenue; one gave 16% in Q2 FY2027. Money owed by customers reached $63.1 billion on Jul 26, 2026, or 60 days of sales, up from 45 in Q1. NVIDIA linked this to longer payment terms for some large customers.

Watch Customer shares and days of sales owed in each 10-Q and CFO commentary.

  • Demand

Large supply commitments if demand slows

On Jul 26, 2026 NVIDIA had committed $279 billion for supply and capacity, up from $95.2 billion in January. When the 2025 H20 rule stopped sales, NVIDIA took a $4.5 billion charge for excess stock and purchase commitments.

Watch Commitments table and inventory charges in each 10-Q ($2.1 billion of provisions in the first half of FY2027).

  • Debt

Contingent guaranties for OpenAI-leased data centers

NVIDIA backs lease values on about 4.25 GW of SB Energy data centers in Ohio, with an OpenAI affiliate as tenant. It pays only if the tenant becomes insolvent or does not pay. Exposure is capped at $105 billion, starts as leases begin (from FY2029) and OpenAI agreed to reimburse NVIDIA.

Watch Lease start dates, any added sites (an option covers about 3.8 GW more) and the guarantees note in each 10-Q.

  • Competition

Rivals, including some large buyers, design their own chips

The FY2026 10-K names AMD, Huawei and Intel as GPU rivals. It also lists Alibaba, Alphabet, Amazon, Baidu, Huawei and Microsoft as designing their own AI chips.

Watch Hyperscale revenue each quarter ($48.7 billion in Q2 FY2027).

  • Execution

Depends on a few outside chip and memory makers

TSMC and Samsung make NVIDIA's wafers; SK Hynix, Micron and Samsung supply memory. NVIDIA owns no chip factories, so a supply problem at these firms could limit what it can ship.

Watch Supply commitments and any supply constraints NVIDIA reports in its 10-Qs.

  • Other

Stakes in other companies swing reported profit

On Jul 26, 2026 NVIDIA held $42.8 billion of listed stakes and $51.2 billion of unlisted ones. Gains on them were $15.9 billion in Q1 FY2027 and $7.8 billion in Q2, counted in net income.
